Today, Artur Chilingarov, President of the Association of Polar Explorers, a member of the Board of Trustees of Arctic World Club, celebrates his 80th anniversary. Congratulations from the Arctic World Club President and the Arcticmorgeo Chairman of the Board of Directors Sergey Egorov.
The route will lie across the Kara, Laptev and East Siberian seas. In September, about 80 scientists from Russia, China and Sweden will set out on an expedition to study the ecology and biochemical changes, caused by the thawing permafrost in the East Arctic’s seas and along the Northern Sea Route, the Tomsk Polytechnic University’s press service said on Friday.
Russia discovered new islands in the Arctic
In recent years, Russian hydrographers have plotted quite a few islands and capes, the total area of which exceeded the area of Monaco. And now, thanks to pictures from space and data from various expeditions, a group of islands in the area of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago has been discovered.
"There are six or seven islands, the existence of which is to be confirmed during the expedition. The largest of them, presumably, has a length of more than 500 meters," said Aleksey Cornis, head of the department of the hydrographic service of the Northern fleet.
A scientific trip is already preparing. It should confirm that the find is not part of the glacier. Participants will visit Novaya Zemlya, where, hopefully, confirmation of the islands existence will happen. Global warming and the retreat of glaciers, under which previously invisible tracts of land open up, is the reason of these discoveries. After a comprehensive study lands will be mapped.
Arctic achievements allowed hydrographs to win one of the main geographic awards in Russia - the national award "Crystal Compass".
